Hamish, loved this. But you should know that Samantha and I are practically neighbors, so if you ever make it to west Michigan you can kill two birds with one stone -- and I will make sure you don’t have to stay in a courtyard Marriott in Kalamazoo. Just make it between May-Sept. :)

Great interview! It was so helpful to hear about writing in the spare snippets of time between a day job and real life!

Funny that both her and George Saunders, while wildly different writers, have said that having a full-time job is focusing for a writer and a helpful safety net while getting started. It's interesting to think of a job as a feature of being a writer rather than a barrier.

I work all day and have an autistic child, so nighttime is my only escape...

Seems like perfect fit for the Trumplandia genre', as he is a mental 2yo and all about his golden potty. Kalamazoo, where I lived for 3 yrs. (2011-14) was a nightmare of predatory sharks living off the flesh of too often drunk WMU students at the teachers' college (biggest in the nation, how's that workin' out?) and only saved by Bicentennial Books and its sole proprietor, Michael, a good conversationalist. I started getting sober there, hopefully for the last time, as K'zoo has several AA Clubs and tons of meetings. The KIA (art museum and classes) was wonderful, as well. Best wishes to any fellow writer! Stress R Us

Hamish, loved this. But you should know that Samantha and I are practically neighbors, so if you ever do decide to come to West Michigan

you can kill two birds with one stone and meet two Substack authors, and I’ll make sure you don’t stay at a courtyard Marriott and get you some exposure to the Big Lake.

Hilarious. She’s funny! I love it. Good for her. It’s nice to see writers get ahead. I applaud that. Also: She admitted actual crime exists!!! Is this a forward step in America perhaps 🤔? (Since right now the lefty line is that crime is basically a white construct and doesn’t truly exist.)
