That "too hot to go fishing" line feels like the start of a lost Hemingway paragraph. Meaghan Garvey's piece had me grinning; that Pinehurst scene with the Viking and the dancehall singer could’ve been pure fiction and I still would’ve bought it. Made me think of a train ride I once took through rural China, where a group of retired PLA officers were drinking baijiu and singing old marching songs well into the night.
Hi! I’m shy (new here) but introducing myself because I love these roundups. I have a pop culture post, podcast and new account to recommend - it’s called celebrity film school, a look into celebrity documentaries. This week we covered the HBO Pee Wee As Himself in two podcast episodes and mini essays. Just wanted to share because I’m so excited to be here!
Tiny, pedantic correction: Hemingway joined the Red Cross in December 1917, when he was 18, was wounded just before his 19th birthday and made it back to the US in January 1919. The 20 year old man who went fishing etc after his return was very different from the boy who had had, at most, 18 summers of comparative innocence.
Love these roundups and checking out new voices on here! I wanted to share a post that connected with me and thought others might enjoy by an American who's been living in Rome for years that really resonated with me (I've been a number of times, myself). It put me in the mood for summer (although admittedly I could do without the heat!). Here’s the link:
The original family cottage is still in the Hemingway family. Sunny, Ernest’s youngest sister, was a friend. Our 4th generation cottage is down from theirs. Her son, Ernie Mainland, inherited it. It is not marked or open to visitors. People are protective. It’s on Walloon Lake, nearer to Boyne City than Petoskey.

For the record, it is never too hot to go fishing.
😂
Reminds me of a joke I heard from a golfer. "I golf in the 80s. If the temperature is above 90, I stay home and drink".
