This a good step in supporting new substackers. We need a daily substack reads and support as many writers possible. However, I would say to do more for new writers so they are discoverable than pushing your superstars with blue, pink, orange or purple tick marks.

Myinc's avatar

I agree that Substack Reads is a great way to support Substack users, and it would be great if they could support newer writers, but there is a diverse range of reads available. The reads that are highlighted in these posts were deliberately selected, and to undermine them just because they were written by authors with a steady following in favour of new writers seems unfair. As a new writer myself, I think it would be more helpful if they had a post dedicated to shouting out new writers instead of overshadowing writers who worked hard to be successful.

RAISINI's avatar

That’s why I said twice a week. Fridays can focus on expert writers, Sundays they can select new writers. Everybody gets the same love. Easy.

Daily is a bit much, I agree with MYINC that twice a week is better. Also, if possible, more room for those who have just started and still do not have a large following. They need to spotlight more than the others.

Just to clarify, it was RAISINI who made the recommendation of twice a week. I do agree with them, but I wasn't the one who said it first!

daily is overkill

current cadence is fine

RAISINI's avatar

Maybe, or maybe not. The issue with the current cadence is, mostly Substack’s golden geese get the exposure, who already have large subscriber base with tick marks, like yourself. They can start 2 times a week Fridays and Sundays and see how it goes.

Putting new people alongside established writers and celebrities launching Substacks is the point, not an oversight. The draw for a roundup of new writers with no following would be so much lower. Most people would just read the big account email and skip the discovery email, unfortunately. Putting new writers alongside established ones is the best way to elevate new writers.

Michael Mohr's avatar

Agree. We need these for newer writers. I admittedly don’t pay a ton of attention to these but usually they’re promoting writers with big followings who came from other platforms.

RAISINI's avatar

They promote writers with big following mainly because that’s the deal they made with those writers when they lured them on Substack, and also offered them a check mark...they keep pushing those writers to grow their follower base feeding off new users...if they don’t do this, then those writers will eventually quit if they don’t see growth. Remember that Substack is taking 10% of revenue, so eventually those writers will think twice to stay if they don’t see growth. This is the same situation with Artists on Spotify. Spotify always promotes popular artists to push their catalogue to generate more income for them...if they don’t, then the big artists will quit. Also because Platforms consider there is a much higher chance that content of popular writers/artists will sell easier due to their popularity.

Love the variety of readings especially this week’s Lofi Girl and arancini posts. Agree with those who have said more frequency of these roundups with much more promotion of newer/smaller writers would be great.

Plugging my own Create Me Free - all about art and mental health, not just art as therapy but how mental health challenges impact artists and why we create anyway. Interviews, research, book reviews, essays from lived experience ...

This week I loved learning about wild collaging from Collage Spamoflauge. (And I look forward to when the app lets me @mention people since I rarely use the web version of Substack).

They could do a segment called "less than 1,000 subs" . That number could be adjusted, but it would be a fun way to highlight quality content that just hasn't caught yet.

I have basically stopped spending time on any social media and use that to read a wide variety of writing here which I’m really enjoying. But I do suppose there’s a cap at some point in terms of how much one can take in.

It’s really a great piece, Sabrina. And the Substack Reads posts are a fun way to start Saturdays!

Fantastic week of readings as usual.

I thought this by Substack was great: https://on.substack.com/p/how-to-sell-a-book-on-substack

This was really eye-opening: a part of the world I've never visited, and only know in a mediated way (books, SM, TV, etc.,) https://www.persuasion.community/p/when-populism-succeeds?utm_source=%2Finbox&utm_medium=reader2

Lovely piece on a possibly paradoxical outcome of exercise https://bradyholmer.substack.com/p/physiology-friday-164-can-prolonged?utm_source=%2Finbox&utm_medium=reader2 (see also this on metabolism, which I recently wrote: https://brainpizza.substack.com/p/toy-models-of-metabolism-and-obesity

And an interesting piece on a very important philosopher: https://substack.com/inbox/post/120522969

Such a good issue this week 😍

Avi Steinberg is the best. I'm a huge fan and his Instragram brings me a lot of joy.

Joe has a very nice banner at the top of article then uses the stroke in the J of his name to create a divider at the bottom. Clever and looks very good. Marina’s work was excellent and Steinberg was a fun read.

Love the mix each week. It’s getting better and better.

I like this process. I appreciate the variety you present and have chosen to subscribe to a few. Not real sure I would have ever found these writers without glancing through. Thanks!

Agreed, I’ve found some of my new favorites via this process.

Spatchcock - what a delightful story. What a great writer. I kept reading and Michael got a new subscriber- me.

Thank you Substack Reads.

I learned a lot here. I agree that we all need to give each other a hand and inspire one another. How many of us write adventure? Just me? Well, that's great.

Myinc's avatar

I also write adventure stories (and fantasy too)! You're not alone.

Absolutely love these saturday morning "reads". I originally started a substack to follow a particular Author I discovered ( Summer Brennan ), then I started writing my own thoughts, and now I stay for the incredible diversity and richness of the other Authors on this platform. Reminds me of the good ole days of the internet with diversity of thoughts, opinions and content before things got somewhat homogenized by selfies.

Great selection! The essay on the Lofi girl is something I never knew I wanted to read, and the art of Grimes’s new Substack is 🔥🔥🔥 As skeptical as I am of her billionaire husband’s recent exploits, that does not detract from her value as am artist. Looking forward to experiencing what she’s got in mind.

Someone on here mentioned a SS Reads for Writers with Under 1,000 Subscribers idea. I think this is a good move. We need more opportunities for those of us who start with zero subs and rise up organically versus moving to SS with 20,000 previous subscribers on other platforms. Maybe a few of us writers just need to start our own.

Yes and they are all selling “oh this is how I got x thousand subscribers on substack” when you are right they have brought them with them or they have previous journalistic following... and substack favouring them doesn’t help!
