This a good step in supporting new substackers. We need a daily substack reads and support as many writers possible. However, I would say to do more for new writers so they are discoverable than pushing your superstars with blue, pink, orange or purple tick marks.
I agree that Substack Reads is a great way to support Substack users, and it would be great if they could support newer writers, but there is a diverse range of reads available. The reads that are highlighted in these posts were deliberately selected, and to undermine them just because they were written by authors with a steady following in favour of new writers seems unfair. As a new writer myself, I think it would be more helpful if they had a post dedicated to shouting out new writers instead of overshadowing writers who worked hard to be successful.

Most people would just read the big account email and skip the discovery email, unfortunately. Putting new writers alongside established ones is the best way to elevate new writers.

They promote writers with big following mainly because that’s the deal they made with those writers when they lured them on Substack, and also offered them a check mark...they keep pushing those writers to grow their follower base feeding off new users...if they don’t do this, then those writers will eventually quit if they don’t see growth. Remember that Substack is taking 10% of revenue, so eventually those writers will think twice to stay if they don’t see growth. This is the same situation with Artists on Spotify. Spotify always promotes popular artists to push their catalogue to generate more income for them...if they don’t, then the big artists will quit. Also because Platforms consider there is a much higher chance that content of popular writers/artists will sell easier due to their popularity.

They could do a segment called "less than 1,000 subs" . That number could be adjusted, but it would be a fun way to highlight quality content that just hasn't caught yet.
I have basically stopped spending time on any social media and use that to read a wide variety of writing here which I’m really enjoying. But I do suppose there’s a cap at some point in terms of how much one can take in.
Joe has a very nice banner at the top of article then uses the stroke in the J of his name to create a divider at the bottom. Clever and looks very good. Marina’s work was excellent and Steinberg was a fun read.

Absolutely love these saturday morning "reads". I originally started a substack to follow a particular Author I discovered ( Summer Brennan ), then I started writing my own thoughts, and now I stay for the incredible diversity and richness of the other Authors on this platform. Reminds me of the good ole days of the internet with diversity of thoughts, opinions and content before things got somewhat homogenized by selfies.

The essay on the Lofi girl is something I never knew I wanted to read, and the art of Grimes’s new Substack is 🔥🔥🔥 As skeptical as I am of her billionaire husband’s recent exploits, that does not detract from her value as am artist. Looking forward to experiencing what she’s got in mind.
Someone on here mentioned a SS Reads for Writers with Under 1,000 Subscribers idea. I think this is a good move. We need more opportunities for those of us who start with zero subs and rise up organically versus moving to SS with 20,000 previous subscribers on other platforms. Maybe a few of us writers just need to start our own.
Yes and they are all selling “oh this is how I got x thousand subscribers on substack” when you are right they have brought them with them or they have previous journalistic following... and substack favouring them doesn’t help!
